Hello,
my name is Heather, and I am an upholsterer, but I also love designing and making cushions.
In my opinion, a good cushion, or a combination of them, can really jazz up a plain sofa or chair.
And it doesn't cost a lot of money to give your sofa a new look with a few new cushions.
I'm a big fan of vintage furniture and fabric. I like to recycle and revive pieces with soul and style, and I think that High Street buys, pale beside pieces with a colourful past life, and a hint of nostalgia.
No two cushions are the same because I use recycled and vintage textiles, and they are invariably only available in small quantities. The fabrics have been sourced from fairs across the UK and Europe – some of the fabrics are extremely collectable, so these pieces are a great investment and also beautifully made.
I also make a range of cushions from vintage silk scarves. I think they are too beautiful to be tied up around someone's neck or stuffed in a bedroom drawer! Some of them are real works of art!
Lastly, I have to confess to having a thing about Japanese vintage kimono fabric. I think it is exquisitely beautiful, there is such amazing attention to detail, and some of it is hand painted or embroidered. I use a small mother and son team who sell through Ebay. They carefully unpick the kimono, launder and photograph it, and then when someone buys it, they wrap it up beautifully, and include a hand written thank you note with every purchase!
It is often very rare, and never to be found again. Here are a few examples:
